Proserpine, Queensland. The Proserpine Whitsunday Uniting Church, an emblem of resilience and hope, is embarking on a remarkable journey to rebuild after being devastated by Cyclone Debbie in 2017. This historic church, which has faithfully served the local community for nearly 125 years, fell victim to the cyclone’s wrath.
Today, Tuesday August 1st, we announce the launch of our Brick by Brick♥ fundraising campaign, appealing to the nation for support to raise an additional $250,000 to rebuild our church.
For decades, the Proserpine Whitsunday Uniting Church has stood as a testament to the unwavering faith and spirit of the community. Through trials and triumphs, we have been a haven of support, providing invaluable pastoral care and guidance to generations of individuals and families.
Our doors have remained open during times of bushfires, floods, and cyclones, offering a sanctuary for those in need, a beacon of hope in the darkest hours. Sunday worship and family memories were wrapped in St James: Sunday School, Baby Shows, Flower Shows, baptisms, confirmations, weddings, and funerals. It was tied to the cycle of life and bound in Faith, family and community memories.
However, Cyclone Debbie unleashed a devastating blow, resulting in the demolition of our church and leaving an empty corner block in our community. Yet, the spirit of the Proserpine Whitsunday Uniting Church Congregation, and the community, remains undeterred.
The Brick by Brick campaign offers an opportunity for individuals, or businesses across the country to sponsor a brick and be part of history. With five levels of sponsorship available, we have ensured that anyone who wishes to participate can do so at an affordable level. Sponsors may choose to remain anonymous or honour the memory of a loved one.
Detailed sponsorship information can be found on our website.
Commencing today, and closing on Tuesday, August 29th, 2023, the Brick by Brick♥ campaign represents more than just bricks and mortar.
It symbolises the preservation of history, the revival of memories, and the reinforcement of community connections. In planning our new Church, we look to our Mission Statement; Care| Community| Christ. Our new Church will enable us to advance the care we provide, rejuvenate our commitment to community service and share our Faith in Christ.
It is anticipated that building works will commence in the coming months, – and so begins the journey of renewal and healing. The Proserpine Whitsunday Uniting Church is poised to rise again, reminding us all that from the wreckage of devastation, hope can emerge.
Join us in our noble endeavour to rebuild a testament of strength and resilience. Let us unite, brick by brick, to ensure that this cornerstone of Proserpine stands strong once more and that the legacy of our church endures for generations to come.
